VCStat shows the vital signs of your Raspberry Pi in a small native
Zune window, straight from the VideoCore firmware:
- CPU (SoC) temperature with a gauge up to the firmware limit
- core and SDRAM voltage
- real ARM clock speed (see throttling at a glance)
- power status, now and since boot: under-voltage, frequency
capping, throttling and soft temperature limit
The "since boot" flags are kept by the firmware itself, so VCStat
tells you if the power supply dropped out at any moment after
power-on - even before you started it. This is the same condition
that shows the lightning bolt icon on screen, and the cause of
mysterious problems such as a missing mouse pointer or random
hangs If you see "Under-voltage since boot: YES",
get a better power supply.
The window refreshes every 1-30 seconds (selectable). Between
readings the program sleeps on timer.device and uses no CPU time;
only changed values are redrawn, and reading pauses while the
window is iconified.
VCStat talks to the firmware through the system mbox.resource, so
the same binary works on Raspberry Pi 3, 4 and 5. Tested on a
Raspberry Pi 3B+; reports from Pi 4/400/5/500 owners are welcome.
Installation: copy VCStat and VCStat.info anywhere (e.g. SYS:Tools).
To start it at boot, put it into SYS:WBStartup.
Source code is included (MIT licence). Written with the help of an
AI assistant (Claude).
History:
0.3 renamed from PiMonitor to VCStat
0.2 universal build using mbox.resource (Pi 3/4/5)
0.1 first version, Raspberry Pi 3 only
